Foot Surgery

Another huge part of my Utah trip and summer has been my Bunionectomies. Two days after the Wasatch Back I had bunions removed from both feet. I was pretty nervous but thanks the awesome support of my sweet friend, Robyn Zito (who had the same surgery last year), I went through with it. The doctor made a 3" incision in each foot, filed down the bone growth (bunion), broke the 1st metatarsal and then straightened and pinned it.

My Mom was great and took care of me, Griff, Isaac and Noah for 10 days following my surgery. I couldn't do anything for 4 days. Totally down and out! Thank goodness for mothers and pain meds. Both were "must haves" after surgery. By the way - my awesome Mom found out a few days after I left Utah, that she had broken her ankle several weeks prior to our visit. Can you believe she took care of me while her own ankle was broken? She is in a boot cast now and healing well. You're amazing MOM!!

I had to wear hot lookin' black booties for several weeks too. I'm now wearing cute, black Mary Jane style Crocks as well as my running shoes. However, I won't be running until next Spring.

A few surprises came with the surgery:

1. My feet are thinner but longer now by at least 1/2 size. So, out go the old shoes.
2. I had to relearn to move my big toe. This motion issue is huge. I went to physical therapy and I'm doing foot exercises each day.
3. It's really hard to be limited because of my feet. They still hurt and are still swollen.
4. A complete revulsion to shoes with small toe boxes - it's a pain thing.

I'm learning patience (again) and working hard to rehab my feet. I will probably brave the gym this week. Sounds silly but I'm worried about either me or other people dropping free weights on my feet.

Each day is getting easier.

At least you've got cute toenails to offset the booties! I can understand your apprehension about the gym. Just imagining a weight somehow dropping on your toes gives me a shiver. Keep healing!

Ouch!! I had no idea! I hope that you heal really quickly and that everything goes better than expected... especially concerning large weights at the gym ;) Thank heavens for your mom, I can't imagine going through that without that help. And also, Happy Birthday!!!!

Um...filed bone?? Jeff just wanted you to know that an actual "saw" was involved, that might be why they still hurt!! We are glad you are doing better. And cute toe nails by the way!!

So sorry to hear about that. I'm sure it will be worth it! Love the toenails!

Wow! Cath! It is amazing that there is such a long recovery for that kind of surgery. Hope things are better now! We miss you guys. Hope all other things are well!
